Mentoring Statement
I take my role as a mentor very seriously. I have been fortunate to have very supportive mentors in my experience in academia, and they helped me to follow my scientific curiosity, develop a research program I am excited about, and value work-life balance. I am excited to build the same mentoring relationships with my students. As a first step towards being an intentional mentor, I have developed the following mentoring statement.
As a mentor, my primary goal is to provide the resources, assistance, and encouragement needed to help my students identify and achieve their personal and professional goals. In order to accomplish these goals, I will work with my students to develop a mentoring plan based on two-way communication; we will identify their primary objectives and the experiences and accomplishments needed to achieve those objectives; and we will develop a strategy and timeline for reaching them. I expect my students to contribute to a vibrant and supportive lab environment; to show initiative in developing and following through on their research; and to communicate with me if some aspect of their research experience or our mentoring relationship isn’t working for them. My students can expect me to develop and maintain an active, diverse, and supportive lab environment; meet with them regularly and provide timely feedback on research questions and manuscripts; and provide the necessary assistance and support to achieve their goals. I strive for my mentoring relationships to be mutually respectful and enjoyable, and I believe this requires open communication.
